...to formally recognize those individuals and organizations who have made major contributions to the cause of hydrogen energy worldwide. It recognizes six categories of such contributions, each award being named after an important historical individual who had pioneered general and/or specific facets of hydrogen energy:
- IAHE Jules Verne Award for Superior Service (a general area of involvement). Jules Verne, of course, predicted the hydrogen energy idea in his 1874 novel The Mysterious Island.
- IAHE Rudolph A. Erren Award for Leadership in Thermochemical Area (involvement with heat engines and combustion, thermochemical production, facets of hydrogen transmission, distribution and storage, e.g., metal hydrides). Rudolph Erren was the noted dynamic German developer of hydrogen fueled motor vehicles, demonstrated in fleet service in the 1930s.
- IAHE Sir William Grove Award for Leadership in Electrochemical Area (involvement with fuel cells and electrolyzers, and other electro-chemical means relating to hydrogen processing). Sir William Grove was the inventor of the fuel cell in England in 1839, producing electricity and water from hydrogen and oxygen.
- IAHE Akira Mitsui Award for Leadership in Biological Area (relating to biological processes for producing hydrogen and synthesizing valued products utilizing hydrogen). Dr. Mitsui was a noted Japanese-American researcher in the photo-biological hydrogen production field, using special types of algae and micro-organisms to this end.
- IAHE Konstantin Tsiolkovsky Award for Leadership in Aerospace Area (relating to the use of hydrogen as the leading aerospace propulsion fuel and as energy carrier in space vehicles, satellites and stations). Professor Tsiolkovsky was the Russian pioneer of Astronautics, who first proposed hydrogen-fueled rocket propulsion for spaceflight in the late 1890s.
- IAHE T. Nejat Veziroglu Award for Leadership in Hydrogen Economy and Policy (recognizing outstanding contributions to the development of the hydrogen economy, hydrogen systems analysis and international hydrogen policies and strategies). Professor T. Nejat Veziroğlu was a pioneer of the hydrogen economy concept and, through his lifelong vision and dedication, transformed it into a global movement by founding the IAHE, establishing the IJHE, and launching the WHEC.
The above represents an outstanding international group of visionaries, scientists, and technologists who, from the earliest days, have played a pivotal role in establishing hydrogen as the leading prospect for a clean, sustainable energy future. Through these awards, IAHE honors both the pioneers who laid the foundation for the field and the contemporary leaders whose outstanding contributions continue to advance progress in this noble endeavor.
An International Awards Committee has been established, consisting of distinguished hydrogen energy scientists from around the world: Dr. Nazim Muradov (Chair), Dr. ZongQiang Mao, Dr. S.A. Sherif, and Dr. Hosam El Nazer.
Suggestions from the members on this recognition initiative are welcome, and nominations for specific individuals and/or organizations for these awards should be forwarded to the IAHE Awards Committee Chair at the following address:

IAHE created the prestigious IAHE Fellow member level in 2010, which is limited to a maximum of 10% of all members. The IAHE is presently seeking nominations for Fellow Level Members. To be eligible, the member should be an IAHE member for at least 10 years and also be a member at the time of nomination, and have had significant and sustained overall impact in the promotion of hydrogen energy. The impact can be in technology development, education, promotion of hydrogen technology, public awareness, or other significant ways. Successful nominations will receive special recognition in the World Hydrogen Energy Conferences.
To nominate a potential IAHE Fellow (self-nominations are welcome), please send a nomination documents including a Nomination Letter, Curriculum Vitae and two Letters of Recommendation via email to Dr. Nazim Muradov, IAHE Awards Committee Chair: nmuradov5@gmail.com
