Matthew M. Mench

Dr. Matthew Mench received his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from Penn State University in 2000. After a year as a Post-Doctoral Assistant, he was promoted to an Assistant Professor at Penn State, where he founded the Fuel Cell Dynamics and Diagnostics Laboratory and was promoted early with tenure in 2007. In August of 2010 Prof. Mench and his research team moved to The University of Tennessee Knoxville (UTK) where he is now Professor of Mechanical and Chemical Engineering, and appointed the Condra Chair of Excellence in Energy Storage and Conversion. Prof. Mench is also a joint faculty at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), and serves as faculty in the CIRE program, a unique joint ORNL/UTK Ph.D. Program in Energy Science. Dr. Mench’s research expertise is in multiphase heat and mass transfer in electrochemical storage and conversion devices including fuel cells and flow batteries. His publications have spanned experimental and computational study of hydrogen fuel cells, microbial fuel cells, electrochemical sensors, flow batteries and combustion. Dr. Mench was a recipient of a 2007 NSF Early Career Development Award and is regularly invited to give talks at Universities and technical meetings around the world. He has published over 100 refereed papers, three book chapters, and is the author of a textbook Fuel Cell Engines, now adopted by Universities around the world. Dr. Mench has been awarded the Outstanding (2006) and Premier (2009) Teaching Awards from the Penn State Engineering Society. Prof. Mench presently serves as the Executive Vice President of the International Association for Hydrogen Energy, Associate Editor for the International Journal of Hydrogen Energy, and as Chair of the MABE Graduate Program.
