|Biography of L. M. Das, Centre for Energy Studies
Dr. L.M.Das is a Professor in the Centre for Energy Studies, Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi (IIT Delhi).Dr Das g has a basic degree in Mechanical engineering His doctoral thesis in the area of Hydrogen –operated engine..Dr Das has nearly thirty three years of teaching /research experience. During this period he has taught several subjects in post-graduate as well as under-graduate level such as Alternative Fuels for Transportation, Environmental Regulation, Combustion Generated Pollution, Internal Combustion Engines, Bioconversion and Processing of Wastes, Power Plant Engineering, Heat Transfer, Fuels, Combustion and Pollution, Energy, Ecology and Environment etc
His primary areas of research interest include development of alternative-fuelled low emission engine/vehicles.. He has to his credit more than 75 international and national publications in the area of alternative fuels such as hydrogen, CNG, biodiesel and hydrogen-CNG blend. He is actively involved in several sponsored research projects and supervises doctoral and masters theses in this a field.
Dr. Das has a close international research interaction. He spent one year(2000-2001) as a Visiting Professor in Centre for Environmental Research and Technology University of California, Riverside, USA. Dr Das worked as a Consultant to Thornton Research Centre, Shell Research Ltd, England .He also had research assignments in Instituto Superior Technico, Lisbon and in Institut National de Recherche Sur Les Transports et Leur Securite (INRETS), Bron, France. During his stay abroad Dr Das had several Seminars delivered in reputed Institutes such as Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Colorado State University, Institute of Transportation Studies (Davis, CA, USA), General Motors Research Lab, Michigan, USA, TNO Road Research Institute (The Netherlands), Asian Institute of Technology (Bangkok).etc. He also participated in the UNIDO-APCTT (Asian Pacific Centre for Transfer of Technology) sponsored Expert Group Meeting on Hydrogen as an Energy Alternative for Developing Countries, Kathmandu, Nepal
Dr Das had attended several international conferences such as 15th World Hydrogen Energy Conference (WHEC), Yokohama, Japan,(June-July 2004) , SAE FTT (Future Transportation Technology Conference of Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) in Costa Mesa, California, USA, (August, 2001), 11th CRC(Coordinating Research Council Inc) on-road vehicle Emission workshop in San Diego, California ,USA March , 2001, 9th World Hydrogen Energy Conference (WHEC), Paris, France, June 1992
He acted as Chairperson, Session (4-B) on Synfuels / I.C. Engines, 9th Miami International Congress on Energy and Environment, Miami, USA ,December 1989.and also as Chairman, session on Alternative Fuels, Third International Conference on Synergy of Fuel and Automotive Technology For A Cleaner Environment, India, Organized by SAE, India Jan.2004, Chairperson, Session on "Engines II", 7th International Symposium on "Application of Laser Techniques to Fluid Mechanics", Lisbon, Portugal, July 1994..He also Participated as a speaker as well as a Panel member “International workshop on Hydrogen Energy” organized by Indian Oil Corporation Limited, India, Dec.2003
Dr Das is a Member, Expert Group on Transportation constituted by the Steering Group of the National Hydrogen Energy Board, India (2004) He is also a Member of the CAR (,Core group of Automotive Research)s constituted by Govt of India,(2003-2004).Thus Dr Das has contributed to preparation of Hydrogen Roadmap/Implementation programme
Dr Das is a Member of the Editorial Board, Journal of Scientific and Industrial Research(JSIR), Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, Govt of India. He has been a Guest-editor of the Special Diamond Jubilee Issue of the JSIRon the subject of “Energy sources of the New Millennium”
He is a Reviewer for International Journal of Hydrogen Energy and Journal of Engineering for Gas Turbine and Power, The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), USA..Dr Das has been a Referee for evaluating hydrogen energy related Research Proposals submitted to Ministry of Science and Technology(DST),Ministry of Non-conventional Energy Sources of Govt of India He has also been Referee for evaluating the quality, relevance and feasibility of Research Proposals submitted for funding to FRST (Foundation for Research Science and Technology), New Zealand.
Dr Das had been an Expert/Resource Person for University Grants Commission (UGC) and developed the Syllabus and the detailed course on Vocational Subject on "Non-conventional Energy Sources" introduced in the undergraduate level in various Universities of the country.. Dr Das has also developed a post-graduate course (in Master’s level) on “Alternative Fuels for Transportation” which has been introduced in the Centre for energy studies of Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi.
